A Song of Ice and Fire goes to HBO
HBO has acquired the rights to make the 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series into a series.

The series will begin with the 1996 first book, "A Game of Thrones," and the intention is for each novel (they average 1,000 pages each) to fuel a season's worth of episodes.

I'm very very happy. HBO has been known to make extremely well done series (A Band of Brothers, Rome, etc etc...) and since this will be done in a series, a whole book won't be stuffed into 2 hours, but instead across hour-long installments.
YAY!

Best news I've heard all day, I like Rome and Band of Brothers back when I had HBO, I just may sign back up for HBO for this.

I'm so excited about this, in part because hopefully it means Martin will be strongly motivated to crank out the rest of the series. Seven seasons is a lot of commitment from HBO, though, and I'm a little skeptical they'll see it through. But I hope they prove me wrong. If the casting is done right and the creative team sets the proper Shakespearian tone, this could be one of the best things ever to touch a television screen.

As long as they don't mess up the casting of Arya, Jon, or Tyrion I'll be happy, I always found their chapters to be the most interesting.

I've been reading Martin's work for a while, and I'm really excited about this. I'm a little skeptical about Benioff and Weiss, but if they manage to get it right it has potential to be great.

Awesome, my favourite fantasy series and I'm sure HBO will do a good job. I pity the poor scriptwriter though lol

I hope they don't use big name stars for this series. I don't want to be distracted from the story.
But I do hope they nail good people for their roles.

I'm fairly optimistic considering GRRM is co-producing and writing 1 script / season. So it seems like he is definetly involved. His blog even mentions it won't be anything like the crazy Earthsea miniseries.

Ever since I read the first few chapters of A Game of Thrones I thought this would make a great TV series (I'm currently reading book 3 - A Storm of Swords).
I'm glad it will be done on HBO - they should do an excellent job on it.
I also think they should avoid big name actors - with one exception - Khal Drogo should be played by The Rock !!!
I am really excited about this !!! Can't wait to own it on DVD !!!

I missed this thread the first time around, and I had no clue there was even talk of a tv show. This is awesome news though. I'm gonna have to get HBO when it comes out.

Now, if GRRM would just finish the final books in the series, I'd be even more happy. I mean, geez, A Dance with Dragons was supposed to be finished already and there's still no ETA. And after the turd that was A Feast for Crows...

Not sure I'd call it a turd, but it definitely wasn't my favorite in the series. As long as the series gets finished is all I care about, I'd like it sooner rather than later, but as long as it gets finished.

It seems to take him and inordinately long time to finish a book, the books seem to be expanding out of control and getting split into multiple books...and he's not a young man. I'm actually worried enough about him finishing the series at all that I've stopped paying attention to it.
Once it's DONE I'll go back and catch up and read the whole series at once. Until then, I'm trying to pretend I never started. Reading thousands of pages and getting really into the story and characters absolutely kills me if there's no ending.
I wish him luck, and hope he finishes... and I'll get the series on DVD if it's any good.

I'm anxious to see what they come up with for casting. The images I have in my mind's eye of the characters are very strong. Tyrion, a particular favorite of mine, might be difficult to cast well. Also whoever gets to play Jaime has a career making role on his hands, imo.

This is going to be awesome. To be honest I have not read all the books but I LOVE the board and card game based off the books.

Would have loved to seen Heath Ledger do Jaime. /sigh
