Towards the end of beta they had several thousand people. Multiply that by $5 for everyone one of them, and you're looking at a pretty substantial cost to the company. Not to mention that a $5 charge was enough to eliminate some people that just wanted a free trial period for the game, rather than people interested in actually testing.
Oh okay, that's reasonable. Not that they couldn't afford it of course, but from a business outlook it makes perfect sense, and since I know alot of people who play just the Beta's on games so its free, I can see why the last part you mentioned is considered.
I had thought it was more than five dollars, I must have misread/misheard something.
My mistake.

I've heard good things about Daggerfall and mixed things about Morrowind. Maybe I should try Morrowind, since I was informed on this board the makers of Morrowind now have their hands on the lovely Fallout series.
If they screw Fallout up, I swear I'll ... um. Hm. Never buy their products again? Guess that works.
Also, as was mentioned, it looks like they have alot of neat charisma things for Morrowind, and I like charisma. Of course I'm not looking forward to the tedious combat system I've seen and heard about...

I have a few posts about clothes and hats, and I can't say it enough: tons of different clothes that don't affect stats = great. Just appearance changing.
And yes, I'd like to see the invisible rule that says "Magic users must wear robes." Robes look great on certain people of if you are going for the tradtional mage look, etc. but my character doesn't really belong in them.

It's funny in a way; beta testing can be fun certainly, but it's also a service to the company. Beta testing is usually open to people to test the game, so the company is getting free feedback from people. It's almost a two-way street that way, but charging people for Beta?
I just find that amusing at first glance, that's all.
