From the Great Book Of All The Real Stuff And How It Really Happened:

“And the Gods looked down upon the world they had created and they were please. Nevertheless, over time, there arose a cry from the world below. While the world was rich and plentiful, with a balance of good and evil, light and dark, there was none worthy to punt.

And the Gods harkened to the cry of their creations and created the most puntable of creatures, hated by good and shunned by evil. An outcast race, the Gnomes, with their pointy little hats and their brightly colored boots, were place in the world to be punted. And there was much rejoicing.

And the Gods said unto the Gnomes; for the length of thy days thou shalt be punted to and fro. And the Gnomes being a bitter race stomped and spat at this commandment wringing their pointy little hats in there knotty little hands.

And the Gods said unto the other inhabitants of the world; thou shalt punt the Gnomes with mighty punts and send them flying to and fro. Whenever thou shall see a Gnome thou shalt punt with all thy might. And the inhabitants thereof did praise the Gods for their wisdom and did offer up prayers and barbequed offerings unto the Gods.”

Which reminds me... I haven't punted our gnome today.....
