0 Alchemist? O F F I C I A L    V A N G U A R D    F O R U M S

To clarify speculation, the alchemist is probably not going to make it for launch, but we will try to get him in. If we don’t he will go in the game at some point.

As far as the sci-fi angle, FMA is not really sci fi and our alchemist would not lean that way, I just like FMA's take on how alchemy works, the whole philosopher stone sacrifices and every time you use alchemy you are burning a soul is a sweet concept, excellent twist and was told very well.

Cooking and fishing are not garauntees for launch. If food does go in it is planned to be more of a secondary thing that all can do if they so choose. There are no plans for a provisioner trade at this time.

Crafting has its own set of attributes. Adventuring skills do not affect crafting prowess in anyway, but racial benefits do exist as Doddy speculated.

Not a biggie since this game is still in tuning, but what do you feel about the slowed-down combat? A 4-5 second/between combat action system (round?) is definitely unique - and something I'm totally looking forward to trying out - but what if it just doesn't work? Wonder if Sigil is willing to forego that system if it seems to be inherently flawed (either in general or for a fun/immersion reason).

Also, wondering, if there is a -space- between attacks, does anyone know how weapon speeds will be used? I'm guessing that once you can attack, weapon speeds determine, well the speed of that attack, and thus blocking or parrying might be different against different speeds - but does the dagger-wielder and the two-hander then both chill for the same amount of time till the next action moment?

Please let me put this into context as that is a quote from me. It boils down to Nelson mentioning that the short demo he received of combat was not overly impressive because he did not see anything new. He later elaborated by stating that maybe it is because he did not actually get to sit down and experience it himself so seeing things appear on screen here and there without knowing exactly what was going on did not bring home what makes our combat more involved. The next day I made sure he got to talk to Talisker face to face about the combat system and I believe he left much happier having things explained to him by the guy who is in charge of the design.

Silius is putting alot of time into only a few areas of crafting, he dropped cooking and brewing for instance because it is so difficult to make the system when you stamp out processing across the board. There is a flavor of doing things in different areas of crafting that cannot be clones from another craft, they are so individual that they literally need to built up from the ground for each.

Silius needs to be careful and so do I, gad zooks, whered my cynicism go, sorry, gota go find it again. That there rabid cat one Dev let loose on me musta bit me at some point, maybe I need a new injection.

While I try not to respond to random posts this one seemed to warrant my attention. So let me give you some facts and perhaps put your worries to rest.

First: Whatever information you have about my career it is wrong. I have never worked on EQ2 nor had I ever seen their system until the game launched. The initial foundation for the VG crafting system was designed well before this. Please check your facts before posting random information about me as this statement could not be any farther from the truth.

Second: Not sure where I said I am officially dropping cooking and brewing. I believe I said it was not a part of the plan at the moment. But things change and as we find time to do things we try to get things in. So let me make you smile by saying that cooking and possibly brewing are within the realm of possibility right now and I hope to start work on them soon.

I hated pressing the icons while crafting. It pretty much came down to a spam fest. I would just spam 2 or 3 of the buttons till i ran out of power, then wait for it to regen and start again. If I did not do this, the subcomponents wouldnt end up perfect, and it was imposible to the 4th quality item. EQ2 had the worse crafting ever. V:SoH should of went with Star Wars Galaxies' crafting. It was much better than the horrible monotony of icon mashing that was eq2.

While I did not work on EQ2 I did work on SWG for a year and a half. Is our crafting system a spam fest…NO. Is there only 2 or 3 buttons to completing a recipe…NO Do your decisions while in the process, your equipped gear, and your skills/attributes make a difference…YES.

I know those of you who have not made it to beta yet do not know what goes on there. The system has grown and the one sided information you may get is just that one sided. Please try to be objective and consider that randomly putting words in a devs mouth or posting facts about them that are not true is not good practice. If you have a question about something then please send me a PM and if I can answer it I will.

And with that I bid you adieu, I must get back to work.

0 Can you really be JUST a crafter? O F F I C I A L    V A N G U A R D    F O R U M S
Nov 12, 2005 - 08:44 AM - by Silius
Hawk,
The key thing that is not being said here is that adventurers will come to you to make them items and you will charge them for it. Since you do not make real items for skill ups the only reason you are generally making an item is at the request of someone else. So if they are charging you for doing a job for them then something is wrong as it is you who should be doing the charging.

As far as penalty goes, the penalty for not doing well is no xp and no reward. Crafting xp is based on your performance during the process and how well you execute the requested task. If you want to speed through it like Jansan mentioned you may finish but at what cost. Ad to that other mechanics we are considering in order to make failing sting I think there will be plenty penalty in work orders when you fail.

/edit Here is a breakdown of the classes

My current plan is that our carpenter will be the person who assembles the final ship, but look for every crafter trade to have a part in makings ships depending on size.

HeHe, you left me a little confused so I guess, and I'm really taking a shot in the dark here. Crafters arent going to make arrows, which is ok, it can be a pain sitting hour after hour to make a bunch of arrows. When I first went through it it almost sounded like we will have bows (wipes brow) but wont have any arrows to shoot, but for sure that couldnt be right, so I changed it around a little in my own thoughts and determined that there will be arrows but vendor purchased.

I kinda like the idea of adding vendor arrows as a sink in the game, it wont hurt one bit the help bulster the community doing this.

Now all we need are things like bolos' and boomeranges, maybe through in a few darts here and there and the infamous blowgun. J/K

Since you've wandered off to sleep, hopefully you, Jansan, and Crestone, or some of the other cronies will see this. Please, please, please, forgive this lowly one.

There will be no arrows at all as a part of the current plan. Bows and crossbows yes but no arrows they will be abstracted. Now things like a magical quiver or something could happen depending on what we decide it will do.

Something of interest has occured here, OMG! the brain is starting to smoke again, or not?

Here we go if it doesnt blow Jansans mind or throw Silius into a tizzy.

I am a fletcher which means naturally part of my skill is making arrows and bows, but I think to myself what bow? Naturally we can expect that most fletchers are going to be building some specifics as far as bows are concerned - reflex - recurve - and whatnot. I as a fletcher however would like to build something very special besides aregualr bow, but there are no gnomes around here as of yet whole will be able to build me those special wheels to enact a compound bow - do I get the skill to fashion the items I need, or will I be required to seek out a metalsmith for the items I need?

Arrows - such a simple subject - but has anyone really taken a hard long look at what shape early arrows would take. Look upon the world and you will find many many types of woods that go into making arrows. Some are too soft, some are too hard and brittle and will not make a good shaft, many are just right but they lack the straightness required to fashiona n arrow that has any worth. It's sorta like making something that isnt going to boomerange back and hit one in the butt. Early fashioning of the implements are making arrows often would provide more failures than successes, knives are the main implement in fashioning the parts, knotching, and prunning items needed for their development. Even the feathers needed for the fletching have somewhat specifics as far as what animal, in this case birds they are gleened from. You wouldn't for instance use the feathers froma swan, they are way too delicate for the purpose, and those from an ostrich dont manage well because they must be broken down for they are too large, not to mention getting kicked in the head can be a pain when trying to get them. Since we are talking some details at this point, not really specifics as such in the process but in the ability to develop the implements of war are we to expect that a fletcher will be able to harvest the materials needed in plenty?

Arrows are naturally fine implements of destruction, so will we see a variety of these guided missles (joke) that will be available. It's understandable that a fletcher could make something that wouldnt be any better than to knock fruit off trees, will we see steel-shaft arrows and such eventually making it as part of the game and will these superior items require some experimentation in order to be developed.

Now, if some answers are available here I'll be very pleased, but I'm sure that both Silius and Jansan are probably still banging their heads against the wall trying to figure out if putting a lathe in the game really works. Don't fret, it's only a question its not like I'm in the game pushing the envelope of the system at this point, which wont happen unless something happens and someone makes a mistake and sees some potential.

Just like to let you know I appreciate what your doing and I look forward to soem very intreging and well developed concepts.

Unfortunately the current decision on the adventuring side is that there will not be arrows in the game. This could change and if it does we will try to support it best we can through crafting. As far as differing bows well we are doing our best to lump different bow styles into the system. And while secondary trade will not be going in (at least not for launch) we are making adjustments to support you being able to support yourself without having to find other crafters outside your trade, but if you do decide to mix the best of multiple worlds the result will reflect this.

Many things have been completed recently in regards to the system and we are at a stage now where we can start really focusing on the meat and executing on my vision and how it fits into the grand scheme of Vanguard. While I wont promise to satisfy your every need, I do promise to do my best to satisfy most of them.

Thank you for the kind words it is very much so appreciated by both Jansan and I. But please do not forget Crestone as he is the programmer who has worked his butt off to support and implement this system giving us a huge amount of functionality. He truly deserves as much Kudos as anyone else on this great development team.
