Yes well, I admit it, this thread caught my attention.
Where that dratted soapbox? Wait a sec, I'll find it...
...Oh, there it is, behind all the hot models waiting to pose for our crack team of character artists. Reference is good, right? Well, yeah, of course being an artist is a "tough job," but somebody has to do it.
Now, to the point; I think there are several ways to portray appealing women, dwarven women included. Speaking of Dwarven women, I don't see any reason whatsoever that they can't look terrific and still look like dwarves. In a game that is as "broad" (a-hah) as Vanguard, there needs to be loads of variety. Dwarves, Halflings, Elves, it doesn’t matter; they all need character, personality, and big boobs. Did I say that out loud? Uh, okay, I was kidding on that last one. That's not to say there won't be any big boobs, but we're not going to rely on that (them?) to make our women appealing. We are about making characters with personality...oh, wait, that was "hot" characters, with personality.
Seriously though, I like to be able to look at a character, male or female, and get a sense of what they're like. It's all about giving the right visual clues--redefining and expanding existing conventional archetypes, then jumping off the high dive and making up new ones--all the while, giving these characters enough charisma to sell snow to an Eskimo. Getting individuality and character into the PCs is where the fun is, and, the real challenge.

Hey Kalthanan, nice post. Most of the things you've mentioned are part of my standard sermon, but I've learned to boil that down for those with short attention spans, as in: "Make it better than real."
Yeah, it's a sound bite, but that's what it's really all about--It has to be convincing, but also meaning photographic accuracy is not always the most interesting approach. Look at a beautifully executed realistic painting then look at a photograph of the same thing. If I like the artist's style, I'll take the painting 99 out of 100 times. ....There's magic there, and, of course, it's all-l-l-l-l-l about the magic....heh, heh, heh

Well Relyk, it seems you have it right. The visual assets in a game need to make sense, in context. It can and should take time for the player to figure out what some things do and how they work, but a puzzle with no solution is only frustrating, not rewarding. Explaining everything with "magic" is lame too, and basically lazy. So-o-o-o yeah, it takes more time and energy to build a logical and realistically functioning world, but hey, what could be more fun?

KA-BOOM!!!
Flames lick the ceiling, and smoke fills room
cough...cough....cough....
Ah, there you are, Fizion. It is I, "Elandar, MIGHTY WIZARD."
In my infinite wisdom and boundless patience, have decided to descend from my Tower of Mightiness and speak with those whose feet actually touch the ground.
Cough, cough
Never mind the smoke; I have everything under control here. Cough ...Of course, a little fire is a good thing, usually, so ignore any buzzers you may hear. They are but a mere annoyance.
So, yes, since I have many extremely important things to do, I'll come straight to the point. You apparently have some interest in this game thing I've decided to grace with my clever insights and expansive intellect. That's a wise move if you enjoy this kind of amusement. You see, this is a fine diversion for one such as I, and since my minions in the art pit seem to follow my brilliant but sometimes vague proclamations and edicts fairly well, it is inevitable that what shall follow will be...well, at the risk of sounding immodest, just divine.
As far as me or my minions costing you or anyone else money is concerned, that has only just begun. Heh, heh, heh. After all, We MIGHTY WIZARDS, and such, have expenses. Have you seen the cost of spell components these days? Try getting a wing of bat, or eye of newt. I'm thinking of dropping an Ice storm, or maybe a wall of iron, on PETA's headquarters. Meddling busybodies. The more I think about that, the more outraged I am. Perhaps the time has come...YES-S-S-S, YES, the time HAS come. I MUST GO!
Raises fist, A crack of THUNDER is heard, Elandar vanishes in a blast of green smoke. ....Oh, gak! Run away, stinking cloud! Run away......

It seems ugly is in.
...You ever notice that sometimes there just isn't enough ugly to go around? By that I mean "good" ugly--the kind you do on purpose--not the accidental kind that runs wild through the streets offending anyone with even half a brain. There's plenty of that, and we'll have none of it, but the other is our friend--yeah, 500 pounds of trouble, coming your way...Well, okay, 480 lbs of attitude, and uh, 20lbs. of water weight, but never mind that. It's all about the ugly attitude, so yeah, ugly is good.
