As a rule I won't get into post mortems on MGS game titles. But I will say that AC1 - it (and continues to be) a successful game. In fact Turbine just shipped an expansion for it.
As for the publishing business - games are cancelled, it happens. At Microsoft we've cancelled single player, multiplayer, and MMO games. For every title we've cancelled I can point to a title that Vivendi, EA, Sony, and NC Soft have cancelled.
The decision to cancel a game is not an easy one, but is usually based on sound business judgment. While the effects can be emotional, the decision is quite dispassionate. It's a decision that we have never made lightly. In some cases games go on to ship and bomb after release, some gamew succeed, others never see the light of day.
Now if you want to make the point that we haven't had a blockbuster MMO to date you are absolutely correct. Perhaps that's why we decided to work with the best MMO developer in the industry?

All of the in game systems including authentication and billing will be stressed via automated systems. We will also use late beta as an opportunity to generate stress numbers from real systems.
Passport is a certainty for Vanguard because it lets us take advantage of billing and authentication systems that are prebuilt and handle millions of transactions a day.
As for web/client - I wouldn't expect a web based authentication solution. Although web based account management is an industry standard and you can expect that with Vanguard.

Oh Anti-Microsoft F.U.D. My favorite! Where should I begin.
First on technologies - As I have stated before on these very boards; We aren't forcing Sigil to use any Microsoft technologies. We make all of these technologies available to Sigil but ultimately they make the decision about what makes it into the game. Are there limits here? – Some very basic ones – example I wouldn’t bet on an Oracle backend or a Linux client any more than I would bet on a PSP version of Super Mario Brothers.
Microsoft is a corporation of over 50k people worldwide. And ultimately we behave like small companies with different motivations and personalities. The SQL server team is very different from Microsoft Game Studios. Microsoft Game Studios is composed of dedicated gamers who love to build games. All of us were gamers long before we were Microsoft employees. We've shipped some fantastic products over the years. One of the posters mentioned Bungie and Ensemble - both of which are internal Microsoft studios composed of older Microsoft employees and members of the original external studios. Not to mention a huge support staff. Microsoft facilities, personnel, engineering, and support went a long way towards making Halo and Age great games.
I think Jon Grande put it best. Given Sigil's history they had the opportunity to work with a number of publishers - Vivendi, EA, Sony, NC Soft, etc. They choose to work with Microsoft, they weren't tricked into it. Brad and Jeff felt that we were the best company to help them realize the vision. And Microsoft agreed to fund and build that vision.
As for the Vanguard team in Redmond - We are dedicated to making Vanguard an amazing game. Don't think for a minute that our own blood sweat and tears aren't going into this product on a daily basis. Many of us have been with Vanguard right from the beginning.
Look I realize that people hate Microsoft as a company and I don't expect to win everyone over. But if your angry about Microsoft Office and don't want to see Clipy in Vanguard - realize that those are different people that sit in a building 8 miles away from MGS(Microsoft Game Studios). We are empowered to build the right products.
-Thx

Cheers for any replies.
We are defintely going to support some type point of sale coupon cards (in fact I just had a meeting about it today) When we have more details we will share that with the community.
