Microsoft has nothing to do with Vanguard, except it will market and distribute the game.
So Sigil Devs won't be able to answer your question.
(I might be wrong, in that case I offer my apologies in advance for my bull****ting).
I don't think Microsoft is really interested in MMOs at the moment, they are just curious.
They tried an in-house solution 2 years ago with a game called "Mythica", which has been scrapped prematurely.
I think Microsoft will wait until the MMO market will be worth a massive investment.
For now I think they will stick with publishing 3rd party games.
And by the way SoE is not the biggest MMORPG company.
NCSoft is the one.
Some titles: City of Heroes, Lineage 1 & 2, Guild Wars, Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa.
The last 3 are still in development, but they look good in terms of fan base and potential customers.
Quite impressive portfolio
ENNNNNH!!! Wrong answer ... we've been in the MMO market, to varying degrees, since we started working on Asheron's Call with Turbine in late 1996 ... and we are making a huge investment in Vanguard with Sigil. To be clear though - it's not just a financial investment (though that, alone, is sizeable) but more importantly we're investing the on-going evolution of Sigil as one of our top publishing partners.
You can cruise several of the other threads related to QA, operations, on-going project management, etc ... to get a sense for how involved we are. We've been working with Sigil since pretty much day one ...
Had to add one edit/postscript ... RE the comment about NC Soft being the biggest ... there are several companies who've deployed MMOs in China that easily rival NC Soft. I can't say for sure if any are larger, but I can tell you that China already has a larger base of Internet users than North America - and it's growing at a much faster rate.
