Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the way most other games handle it right now. I know EQ originally didn't, and you could really screw yourself by editing the default XML, but they've long since fixed that.

Yeah, and that's ultimately the issue. With these kinds of things it's all about bang for the buck, and while an editor would be cool and helpful in a lot of ways, would that time really be best spent on said editor when there are a myriad of other places it could be devoted?

A community effort would certainly get around that problem nicely, though.

From the perspective of a tools programmer, I'd love to put together an editor that makes UI modding simple and less error-prone. We've talked about it some, and I have a lot of ideas.

Whether it will actually happen (at least prior to release) is, of course, up in the air, but I'd certainly be interested in listening to any ideas anybody had for such a tool, if only to satisfy my own personal curiosity.

That said (for some reason, I always seem to say "that said" in my posts), when it comes down to it, XML is fairly simple and once you know the basics and the breakdown of the UI, editing it "by hand" isn't so terrible. I just think a tool for it could be *really* cool. Whether or not said tool would actually add enough value to be worth it is unclear.

But I'm a dreamer.
