We'll end up with the SWG:NGE and WoW "too busy to talk" syndrom.

Hundreds of people on the screen scurrying back and forth with no one saying a word.

Just had to interject right away here: the 'too busy to talk' syndrome you refer to drives me NUTs. I *need* to talk and socialize in these games. About the game in general, about our next combat, and about RL life things too. I play with people I already know, but I also like to meet people I didn't already know. The 'too busy to talk' syndrome stems from an over reaction to the 'too much downtime' problem. The result of the over reaction has been a detriment to community building in MMOGs and ultimately that magical transition that a good MMOG makes from being just an online game into a real world and also a home for players. The relationships built in these games are *real* despite what some people assert who haven't really experienced what we have.

So the pendulum has swung too far the other way. There *is* a happy medium. While there was too much downtime in EQ, the 'too busy to talk' alternative is equally unacceptable. So, in a nutshell, we are heavily committed to finding that happy medium.

I can say this, that while we don't have it perfect yet in beta, that I leveled my warrior up with my buddies to 36 between beta 0 and 2 and I had a blast. We went all over the place, had great times exploring, fighting, obtaining sweet items, but at the same time still had plenty of time to get to know each other better, talk between combat or while traveling, etc. I feel a lot closer to those guys than when we started -- some of them I knew already, others only slightly. Now, I know them well and we hang out like we've always known each other at Fanguards and the like.
