EG was much better than Speakers or Xeno. It seems he felt that EG moved ahead too fast through the plot, and skipped a lot of character development. It also seemed that while EG was relatively fresh and limited in its content, which led to a compelling plot, the sequels were trying to be much more epic than EG, which made the drama and characters feel pushed upon me.
"Neuromancer" is also one of my favorites.
Whats on your top 5 list?
Actually, it's a very dismal outlook for me with Card... I'm running out of books. Just finished Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus a couple days ago.
A couple that I liked which were in the fiction section of Barnes and Noble rather than the sci-fi/fantasy were Lost Boys and Treasure Box (I think that was the name).
I've tried the Alvin Maker series and it didn't grab me right away, but I'll probably read it anyways.
Back on topic (sortof), my mom brought me Deception Point today, another Dan Brown book. Reading the back, it appears to have about 0 things in common with the Da Vinci Code, looks like a political thriller or something. I'll report back.
Another book to try, which I loaned to msew, is Altered Carbon... can't remember the author right now. It's his first book, pretty good for a debut.
I read his second book, Broken Angels, last week. Pretty good, although there's a central prop in the book that's so similar to a Stargate that I was a bit distracted by my own dork level for noticing.

Agreed, although have you noticed the real difference in quality, if I might be so bold, between Card's books?
For example, I think Ender's Shadow is one of the best books I've EVER read... it's very much in my top 5. But then Shadows of the Hegemon? It just didn't grab me much... it wasn't 'bad' per se, but I didn't find it even CLOSE to Ender's Shadow.
Going further back, look at the very different approach in pace and style between Ender's Game and Xenophobe, etc.

So Caliandre, is Quicksilver any good? I guess I could get up and go ask you... maybe I will. The rest of you will never know!!!
Hmm, well it is "long"... it could be that the subject matter was a bit more interesting to me than cryptonomicon. I can definitely say that I didn't find it to be a page turner but interesting and funny nonetheless.
Of course, I did buy it in an airport and we had four different flights and layovers amounting to at least 24 hours of nothing-to-do time. I'm also thinking back, and I read The Count of Monte Cristo around that time as well.. talk about wordy.. maybe I was in a phase.
Strangely, a couple of you guys mentioned Diamond Age... I liked the beginning, but my interest level in the book sortof diminished as I went through it. So that's two of his books that I've not finished, yet I've bought all of them including Zodiac (and the sequel to Quicksilver which I didn't know was out). I'll have to pick it up once the newness of City of Heroes has worn off.

Damn you and your cryptic answers Mr. McQuaid

It really means, quite frankly, that I truly do think those ideas are cool, but there is no way I'm going to commit to those being in the game this early and have player expectations go off the chart and lead us all into trouble as we've seen in other MMOGs.
I'd like to (idealist that I am) be able to respond to something that we find intriguing or that we agree with philosophically without immediatley having the perception that it's a promised feature in Vanguard at release.

It just started to drag (IMO).. and that is NOT a good thing for a book the weighs 40 pounds.
Was Quicksilver better?

I liked the book. I'd just finished reading Neil Stephenson's Quicksilver, and the writing style of the Da Vinci Code didn't appeal to me as much at the time. Then again, I read them both around Christmas when we were off work and thus had time to do such things as pay attention to most of the words in a paragraph. Quicksilver is much denser... I petered out on Cryptonomicon (another book by the same author) when I tried to read it and go to work during the day.

Dunno about that, but I really did enjoy it, and it's rare that I enjoy something that is so 'mass market' like that... Reminded me of the band Evanescence -- I love 'em AND they're popular -- go figure. (Heh, good think my taste in MMOGs seems to be a bit less esoteric than, say, music )
Also prodded me to do more investigation into early church history, etc.
A lot of fun.
Angels & Demons was really good too, which I read first, but not quite as polished.
I really like the way he took so much RL stuff and intermixed it into his story and fiction. Reminds me of the Area 51 series of books where the author (Robert Doherty) took just about every historical event and myth and tied it all together into one big fairly coherent plot and storyline. Kind of what the X-Files could have been
