I just picked up the very first 8 or so episodes at Fries here locally. Has the first episodes, with the first doctor and his annoying as all heck daughter, and the their first encounter with the Daleks. Pretty cool if you take into consideration the age, the budget the must have had, etc. Plus I'm a fan of old English sci-fi (huge fan of UFO, Space 1999, etc). So some of it is being made available on DVD slowly but surely, and scanning amazon.uk you can see that there's more on DVD (though not everything of course) than is available here. The nice thing about the DVD revolution is that a lot of old TV series are finally being compiled together and offered in box sets on DVD.

Before sci-fi showing the latest (I think) Dr. Who series, I really knew very little about Dr. Who. I vaguely remember seeing some episodes when I was like 4 or 5 on TV with the Daleks, but that's about it.
Now I'm watching the series on sci-fi and really liking it.
I then went and google'd around to find out more about Dr. Who.
Holy crap -- the Dr. on sci-fi is the 9th doctor, there have been tons of series in the UK, and it's arguably the longest running sci fi show ever!
I found tons of web sites, FAQs, episodes listings, wiki entries...
So now I've gone from completely ignorant to completely overwhelmed and confused.
Is there anyone who is a Dr. Who knowledgable person who can lead me in the right direction? I want to learn more about the shows in general, where I can find out good info, but at the same time not read about every episode and have the series and stories spoiled for me. Also, it seems that most of the DVDs that do exist for Dr. Who are region restricted and in PAL. I have a de-restricted DVD player (shhh -- don't tell anyone) that I bought to watch some Japanese Best Motoring DVDs (sports car show in Japan) that were region encoded, and they play fine, but Japanese TV is different than PAL, yes? If I buy some Dr. Who stuff on amazon.co.uk, will it play on my de-restricted DVD player?
Oh, and I'd much rather buy DVDs made for America and not have to use the de-restricted player, so please no lectures there, heh. It's just that often, there's a lot of stuf that won't be released in the USA period, or at least for a very long time, so what is a person to do?
thanks in advance.
